The difference between clearing scrub and managing it
Scrub is easy to cut and hard to get rid of. Bramble, gorse, blackthorn, hawthorn and buddleia all regenerate hard from cut stumps and root systems, which is why sites that get flailed once a year look worse every year. GGT does both halves of the job: the initial clearance, and the follow-up that actually holds the ground.
For a one-off clearance we strip the scrub back with tracked excavators and flail heads, grub out root systems where the land is going to be used or built on, and chip or cart away the arisings. For ongoing control we put the site on a programme — cut at the right point in the season, with targeted herbicide treatment to the cut stumps and regrowth where that is appropriate, so the scrub is progressively pushed back rather than trimmed in place.

Because we run our own tracked machinery we can get onto embankments, soft ground, river banks and woodland edges that wheeled plant cannot reach — which is usually exactly where the scrub problem is.

Scrub Clearance — frequently asked questions
Will the scrub just grow back?
If all you do is cut it, yes — bramble, gorse and blackthorn all regenerate hard from cut stumps and roots, and a site that is only flailed tends to get denser over time. Stopping it means either grubbing the root systems out physically, or treating the cut stumps and the regrowth with targeted herbicide at the right point in the season. We will tell you at survey stage which approach suits your site and your budget.
Can you clear scrub during nesting bird season?
Scrub is prime nesting habitat and the nesting season broadly runs March to August, though it varies. Clearing active nests is an offence, so where work has to happen in that window we check the vegetation for active nests before clearing and work to what the check finds — which may mean leaving sections until later. Where we can, we simply programme scrub work outside the season, which is cheaper and simpler for everyone.
Do you handle conservation and habitat scrub management?
Yes. On conservation sites the objective is usually not to remove all the scrub but to hold it at a particular structure or extent — keeping grassland open, maintaining habitat mosaic, or protecting a specific feature. That is a management programme rather than a clearance job, and it works best where the specification comes from your ecologist or site manager and we deliver against it.
What happens to the cleared material?
Most scrub is chipped on site. The chip can be left as a mulch where that suits the site, stockpiled, or carted away. Non-chippable material, stumps and spoil are removed and disposed of responsibly. We agree exactly where material ends up before we start, because that is often the difference between two very different prices.
Can you get onto steep banks and soft ground?
Usually, yes — it is one of the main reasons clients call us. We run our own tracked excavators and machinery specifically so we can work embankments, river banks, woodland edges and waterlogged ground where wheeled plant cannot go. We check access and ground conditions on the survey and bring the right machine rather than the nearest one.
