What we do

Grounds maintenance that works around the school day

GGT maintains grounds for schools, academies, colleges and multi-academy trusts across the North West. A school site is not a commercial estate with grass on it — it has pupils moving across it at fixed times, safeguarding obligations, a duty of care for tree safety, and a budget year that runs April to March. We programme the work around all four.

In practice that means the noisy, machinery-heavy work — flail mowing, hedge cutting, tree work — lands in the holidays or before the gates open, and the routine visits happen without crews crossing paths with pupils. Our teams are DBS-checked, sign in and out at reception, and work to whatever site rules your safeguarding lead sets. Nothing is left on site overnight that shouldn’t be.

Because we also do tree surgery, fencing and weed control in-house, one contractor covers the whole site. That matters when a boundary fence needs repairing after half term, or a tree survey flags deadwood over a playground — it is the same contract, the same contact and no second procurement exercise.

How we work

From site walk to a programme that runs itself

Free site survey

We walk the site with you, map the grass, hedges, beds and trees, and note the access constraints — gates, pupil routes, pinch points and delivery times.

A programme, not a guess

You get a written schedule of visits for the year with a fixed price, set against your budget year and the school calendar so you know exactly what lands when.

The same crew each visit

Consistency is the whole point. The same DBS-checked team gets to know the site, so standards do not slide and nobody has to be re-briefed every visit.

Reported and evidenced

Visit records, tree inspection findings and any safety issues come back to you in writing — the paper trail governors and trust boards need.

Questions

School Grounds Maintenance — frequently asked questions

Are your crews DBS-checked?

Yes. Any operative working on a school site is DBS-checked before they attend. We also brief crews on your site rules, sign in and out at reception, and keep teams to agreed routes so they are not crossing pupil movements. If your safeguarding lead wants specific arrangements in place, tell us at survey stage and we build them into the method statement.

Can you work in the school holidays?

Yes, and for most schools that is exactly how we programme it. The heavy, disruptive work — hedge cutting, flail mowing, tree surgery, fencing — goes into the holidays or the early morning before the gates open. Routine grass cutting continues in term time at times that suit you. We build the calendar around your calendar, not the other way round.

Do you handle tree safety inspections on school grounds?

We do. Schools have a duty of care for trees on their land, particularly where they overhang playgrounds, paths, car parks and boundaries. Our qualified arborists inspect the trees, report what they find in writing, and carry out any remedial work — deadwood removal, crown reduction, felling — under the same contract. See our arboriculture page for the detail.

Can you cover several sites for a multi-academy trust?

Yes. Multi-site trusts are some of the most straightforward contracts to run well, because one programme, one price structure and one point of contact covers every site. We survey each site individually so the specification reflects what is actually there, then report centrally so the trust can see all sites in one place.

What accreditations do you hold?

We hold CHAS, Constructionline Gold, Achilles UVDB and ISO 9001, and carry £10 million public liability cover. We are also registered to National Highways Sector Scheme 18, which is the quality scheme for landscape and ecology works on the highways network — a higher bar than most grounds contracts require, and useful evidence at pre-qualification.

Which areas do you cover?

We work across the North West from our Blackpool base — Lancashire, the Fylde coast, Preston, Lancaster, Blackburn, and into Greater Manchester and Merseyside. Tell us where the site is and we will come out and survey it. Call 01772 343285.
