No — and no fencing contractor should claim to. The licence sits with your ecologist or the licensed ecologist named on the scheme, and the ecological decisions are theirs. Our job is to install the mitigation exactly as their method statement specifies, to the right line, depth and detail, and to evidence it. We work alongside ecologists on most of these schemes and are used to their reporting requirements.

National Highways Sector Scheme 18 is the sector-specific quality management scheme for landscape and ecology works on the highways network. It sits on top of ISO 9001 and is a requirement for contractors delivering this type of work for National Highways and its supply chain. In practice it means our processes for ecological works have been independently audited — which is exactly the assurance a principal contractor needs at pre-qualification.

Yes. Amphibian and reptile exclusion fencing is normally specified against Natural England’s great crested newt mitigation guidelines and the CIRIA wildlife fencing design guide, and that is what we build to. If your ecologist has specified a particular product, dig-in depth, overhang or trap regime, we install to that specification rather than a generic detail.

Ecological fencing is usually driven by a hard date — the barrier has to be functional before trapping starts or before the works window opens. Tell us the date at enquiry stage and we will tell you honestly whether we can hit it. For schemes already in programme we would rather book the slot early than promise something tight and let the ecology programme slip.

Our base and the bulk of our work is the North West, but protected species fencing is a specialist package and we travel for it — particularly on highways and infrastructure schemes where we are already in the supply chain. Tell us where the site is and we will tell you whether it works.

Yes, and it is usually cheaper and faster that way. Fence lines almost always need stripping and clearing before installation, and there are often ecology-sensitive clearance constraints on the wider site. We handle vegetation clearance and land clearance in-house, so one contractor clears the line, installs the barrier and reinstates afterwards.
