with an operator, or on dry hire

The machine

Why fencing contractors ask for a tracked knocker

A tractor mounted post knocker is fine on flat, dry, open ground with a clear headland to turn in. The problem is that a lot of fence line is not on flat, dry, open ground. It is along an embankment, down a wet field margin, tight against a watercourse, inside a compound or on a site where a tractor and knocker simply will not fit or will churn the ground to bits getting there.

A tracked machine walks in. It spreads its weight, it holds a slope, it works in a fraction of the width, and it puts the mast where the post needs to go rather than where the tractor happens to be able to stop. On the right ground it will drive posts all day at a rate no team is going to match with a hand held driver, and it drives them straight and to consistent depth, which is what actually determines whether the finished fence looks right.

We own ours and we run it constantly on our own fencing contracts, so it is maintained and we know what it will and will not do. You can take it with one of our operators, which is how most clients use it, or on dry hire if you have someone competent to run it and the site suits. Either way, tell us the ground conditions and the post spec and we will tell you honestly whether it is the right machine for your job.

What it is used for
  • Stock fencing and post and rail
  • Deer, security and mesh fencing
  • Highways and motorway boundary fencing
  • Agricultural and estate fencing
  • Straining posts, strainers and turning posts
  • Embankments, verges and soft ground
  • With an experienced GGT operator
  • Dry hire where site and competence suit
How we work

Straight posts, consistent depth, no drama

We check the ground first

Post spacing, post spec, ground conditions and access all change what the machine will do in a day. A five minute conversation, or a quick site visit, stops you paying for a machine that was never going to suit the site.

Operator or dry hire

Most clients take the machine with one of our operators and buy the fence line driven. If you would rather run it yourself we will consider dry hire, subject to your operator’s competence and the site.

Delivered on our own transport

We move the machine ourselves, so delivery is booked around your programme rather than a hire desk’s. We will tell you what access we need before the day, not on the day.

Accredited for live sites

CHAS, Constructionline Gold, Achilles UVDB Silver Plus, ISO 9001 and National Highways Sector Scheme 18, so the machine and the operator can work on highways and infrastructure schemes.

Questions

Tracked Post Knocker Hire — frequently asked questions

Can I hire the post knocker without an operator?

Yes, dry hire is possible on this machine because it is ours. We will want to know who is operating it and what the site is like first, because a tracked knocker in inexperienced hands is slow at best and dangerous at worst. If we are not comfortable we will offer you the machine with an operator instead, which usually works out quicker anyway.

How many posts will it do in a day?

It depends far more on the site than the machine. On open, workable ground with posts laid out and a second person feeding it, output is high. On a steep embankment, in rock or flint, in a tight compound, or where the line has to be surveyed as you go, it drops a long way. Tell us the length, the post spec and the ground and we will give you a realistic figure rather than a flattering one.

Will it work on banks and soft ground?

That is the main reason people ring us for it. Tracks spread the load and hold a gradient far better than a tractor, so embankments, wet field margins, river banks and reinstated ground are all workable where a tractor mounted knocker would either sink or not get there at all. There are limits, and we will tell you where they are before you book it.

Do you deliver, and how much access do you need?

We deliver on our own transport across the North West. What matters is getting the low loader close enough to unload safely and having a route for the machine to walk in. Send us a pin or a site plan and we will confirm access before the day rather than turning up and finding out.

Can you just do the whole fencing job instead?

Very often that is the better answer. We are a fencing contractor in our own right, so rather than hiring a machine and finding labour you can hand us the whole thing — line, posts, wire or panels, gates and the lot. See our commercial fencing and ecological fencing pages, or just tell us what the fence needs to do.

What does it cost?

It depends on operator or dry hire, how long you need it and where the site is, so we price each job rather than publish a rate that would be wrong for most of them. Call 01772 343285 with the location and the length of fence and we will give you a number.

Which areas do you cover?

Right across the North West of England — Blackpool and the Fylde, Preston, Lancaster, Blackburn and wider Lancashire, plus Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire. For longer fencing contracts we travel further. Call 01772 343285 and tell us where the site is.

Got a fence line that needs driving?

Tell us the site, the length and the post spec and we will come back with a price — no obligation.
